Donna Nook Nature Reserve can be found on the East Coast of Lincolnshire England, it has one of the biggest seal colonies in the country and we live right next door to it :)
My hubby took me on a date on an unusually warm day in late November, here in the UK we had a glorious Indian summer.
Tragedy struck at Donna Nook Seal colony when a high tide on the 28th of November along the East Coast (which was caused by a storm surge out to sea) resulted in many seal pups being separated by their mothers.
The wildlife trust believe 75 pups lost their lives and some had to be rescued and taken to be looked after by the seal sanctuaries in Mablethorpe and Skegness, it’s difficult to know the exact number of pups that died.
75 is a relatively low number to loose their lives, sounds a lot until you discover that at Donna Nook Seal Colony well over 1,000 births a year.
The day we went (19th November) to Donna Nook there was between 521/880 pups on the beach (the wildlife trust takes a count every week). When we went to the seal colony there it was early in the seal pupping season, the first births at Donna Nook in 2011 was on the 31st October.
